Building a shed to Firewood Wood Age – Why you should use firewood shed plans

I moved into my first house with a fireplace just over 10 years ago. I imagined sitting on cold winter nights a roaring fire. The reality was very different: I found myself in a cold, smoke-filled room, my smoke detectors blaring.

Living on a wooded lot, in the autumn I gathered kindling and logs of my property, stacked them around the house and brought them to burn when the winter came. This proved a disaster as the damp wood and green. It was difficult to light and when I managed to start a fire to smoke it instead of heat. One of my neighbors let me in on the secrets of preparing firewood. First, if you get wood that is green, you must be split and age. It should be kept off the ground and stacked in a way that air can get to the helping to dry out: dry wood smoke.

My first attempt at a firewood storage shed was to simply stack wood, and cover with a tarpaulin. The wood was protected by the weather, but it retained its moisture, and still smoked. At that time I bought some old wood and decided to invest in some good plans and a shed for firewood following years to build.

One thing to consider is that firewood is sold by the cord, which is a pile of 8'x4'x4 '. Most firewood shed plans are designed to fit at least one cord, so your shed will be around 5-10'wide and 6'deep and high. My wooden barn has three walls and a roof with no front or a floor. The open front allows for easy access and good ventilation, and I dug the ground and replaced by gravel on which timber can be stacked.

I try to buy wood in the spring, when it seems to be cheaper, and always have to make sure the barn full by Summer's End, so the chance for old and dry wood. I fill my barn, but do not pack the timber properly, so a good airflow. I also have the wood turning, so I'm always using old wood that is clean burning, not green wood that I added.
