Non-material on Amazon Kindle?

I think getting a Kindle. I know how I can get on the Amazon books plus a few books from other sources. But can I easily loaded on the private documents? For example, if my boss e-mails me a report in PDF format, I can easily read on my Kindle? What if my Friend e-mail me a Word file of his novel – that I can charge my Kindle too? (Via USB, for example?) I would like comments from someone who has experience with this.
